West Ham's origins
The first professional team to represent Essex, West Ham actually emerged from the bankruptcy of amateur team Old Castle Swifts in 1895. Changing the team name to Thames Ironworks FC, it is Hills who is predominantly remembered for founding the team. Impressively, while Thames Ironworks FC, began their campaign on a strictly amateur basis, the team proved to be so successful that by 1898, the team went professional, joining the Southern League Second Division. At the turn of the century, in a bid to infuse a new era for the team, Thames Ironworks officially changed their name to West Ham United Football Club. Suffice to say, it is because of this that West Ham retains their nickname of "The Irons" and "The Hammers", referencing their workman roots!
They are one of eight clubs to have never fallen below the second tier of English football, and have spent 60 of their 92 league seasons in England's top flight. Some of the best West Ham United FC players include three members of the 1966 Football World Cup-winning England team - Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. Current West Ham United FC captain Mark Noble has played almost his entire football career at the East London football club and has played more EPL matches than any other West Ham player. Cheer on Noble and his team as they take on the likes of Chelsea, Man City and Brighton in the new Premier League season. Buy West Ham United FC tickets today!
