The first AFC South division winners
Based in Nashville, the Tennessee Titans began life as the Houston Oilers in 1960. Founded by successful businessman Bud Adams, the franchise lifted the very first AFL Championship title and then successfully defended it a year later before joining the National Football League during the 1970 merger of the AFL and NFL. In 1997 the team moved to Tennessee and adopted the guise of the Tennessee Oilers, changing once again to their more familiar name after two seasons. That same year the franchise played the St. Louis Rams in their first ever Super Bowl appearance and in 2002, they joined the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans as the four founding members of the AFC South. They won the division’s first title and added a second in 2008, by which point they had also qualified for their 15th playoff. The incredible atmosphere of the Nissan Stadium
Following a season a piece at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium and the Vanderbilt Stadium, the Tennessee Titans set up home at the Nissan Stadium in 1999. Located on the Cumberland River’s east bank, the 69,000-capacity venue has also been used for various pop concerts, soccer games and postseason college football encounters over the years. Hall of Famers, such as wide receiver Randy Moss, center Kevin Mawae and offensive tackle Bruce Matthews, are just a few of the major names who have walked out on to its field in the team’s famous navy blue colours, while coaches during the same period have included Jeff Fisher, Mike Munchak and Mike Vrabel. Fans who head to the multi-purpose stadium on matchdays can look forward to an incredible atmosphere buoyed by Rac, the mascot modelled on Tennessee’s state animal, the raccoon. Alongside their three fellow AFC South teams, the Titans also count the Pittsburgh Steelers as their major rivals, so expect a particularly rousing experience whenever the Black and Gold Brigade come to town.
