Rome Masters History
The Foco Italia Club in Rome hosts the Rome Masters and has done since the 1930s but it didn't permanently do so until 1987. It became a championship open to professionals in 1969 once recommencing in 1950 after stopping in 1936. The competition now hands out over €7 million in prize money over the exciting 8 days that are usually held in May each year.
Austrialia dominated the competition in the 1960s with 6 of the 10 wins going to Australian players Rod Laver, Marty Mulligan, Tony Roche and John Newcombe. It is no surprise to learn that in recent years Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were kings of the Rome Masters, but Andy Murray recently put an end to their 11-year rule. Australia was a dominating force for the women's singles in the 1960's with Lesley Turner and Margaret Smith winning 5 times between them. More recently Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have regularly gone on to win the tournament.
A Glamorous Event
Andy Murray disrupted the winning streak of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in 2016 on his 29th birthday when he beat Novak Djokovic. Andy Murray won 6-3 6-3 and this was the first time he had beaten Novak Djokovic on a clay surface.
Rome Masters tickets are always in high demand for this popular glamorous event. The Foco Italia Club is outside of the centre of Rome and has easy links to the entertainment of city centre. During the Rome Masters, the Foco Italia Club holds concerts in the swimming pool complex and has provision to entertain over 40,000 children across the tournament.
