Music that made history
Also known as Ashtray Heart, the band’s first name, Placebo was formed in 1994 in England and has been a smashing success ever since. Originally formed by Brian Molko (vocals and guitar), Stefan Olsdal (guitar and bass), and Robert Schultzberg (drums), the band turned into a duo after Schultzberg left, with only the former two of the original members. Still, that has not made it any less of a powerhouse, both at live performances and on record - a reason not to miss out on getting some Placebo tickets. Inspired by bands like Sonic Youth and Depeche Mode, this London-based band rose to fame in 1997 with "Nancy Boy", which ranked 4th in the UK Album Chart. Subsequently, they went on to work with other music scene giants such as Justin Warfield, David Bowie, Lantana, Alison Mosshart, Eagles of Death Metal, and Michael Stipe. The band is also known for its game-changing pieces like "Themselves" which has earned them a long series of awards such as International Duo/Group of the Year in 2004, Classic Songwriter in 2006, Best Alternative in 2009, Artists’ Artist in 2005.
Soundtrack of a generation
Often dubbed ‘the’ alternative rock band, Placebo is known for its feel and sound straight from the 1990s, a time in which great music was made. But what makes great music? Many would argue that great music does not consist of catchy tunes and rhyming lyrics, but rather by a message, something listeners can relate to, something that sparks debate. If that is the case, it is not hard to see how Placebo can be considered a piece of music history. Indeed, the band has sparked controversy from the very beginning, with Molko wearing dresses and make-up in public and both founding members openly speaking about hot topics such as sexuality and drug abuse, both on and off the stage. Their first success, "Nancy Boy", talks about sex and sexuality and touches on homosexual themes, while "Special K" is a clear reference to drug abuse with the title itself being a slang word for ketamine. Poverty and family violence are also a present theme in their songs – "One of a Kind" and "Black-Eyed" are perfect examples – as is the desperation of feeling different ("Special Needs"). If you want to hear these ground-breaking successes live together with many more, buy Placebo tickets now on StubHub. You find you cannot make the show?
