Rising from nothing
Founded in 1933, the Pittsburg Steelers are members of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division and compete in the National Football League (NFL). The team was initially called the Pirates and in 1940, changed their name to the Steelers. The 1930s through the mid-1940s saw no favour for the Steelers. They lost their inaugural game against the New York Giants with a disappointing score of 23 – 2, and never had a record beyond .500 during that period. The Steelers’ first taste of an almost-victory came in 1947 when they were able to enter the playoffs and score a tie with the Philadelphia Eagles. The tie was settled with a tie-breaking playoff game with the Steelers losing to the Eagles with a 21 – 0 score. The dismal years of the Steelers eventually changed come 1969 after the hiring of a new coach. Coach Chuck Knoll, who led the Baltimore Colts to championship, made several draft changes in the Steelers’ lineup as one of his first strategies. Among the new players that Knoll drafted to the Steelers were Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, and Franco Harris. By the mid-1970s, the Steelers was studded with a lineup of Hall of Famers. From then on up to 2017, the Steelers won eight conference championships, 23 division championships, and 6 league championships. They have also appeared in 30 playoffs during that period.
Throughout their existence, rivalries between the Steelers and other teams have emerged. One of the most intense rivalries of the Steelers is with the Oakland Raiders. The rivalry was at its height during the 70s and 80s but eventually faded as years went by. Another rival of the Steelers is the Cleveland Browns Playoff. The rivalry began in 1950 and still carries on to this day with the Steelers mostly dominating the Browns. Since their inaugural games, the Steelers have already moved to six different stadiums. Home games are currently played at Heinz Field where the Steelers relocated in 2001. You can catch the Steelers at Heinz Field, or you can also catch them as visitors in other locations.
