In-your-face metal
Drum machines, synthesizers, and autotuned singers may be taking over most of the world right now, but not so in Sweden. In the age when laptops have replaced real instruments with electronically produced automated compositions, the folks in Sweden still keep their listening palate attuned to guitar-driven, band-oriented music. Second only to Finland, the Swedes produce the highest number of death metal bands per capita. The Scandinavian country favors things heavy and hard, and among the loudest and proudest of these hair spinning, low-growling bands is Opeth. Hailing from Stockholm, Opeth was formed in 1989 and is still actively touring and recording today. The band first gained recognition during the early years after their formation, actively gigging in local bars and touring in Stockholm’s underground death metal scene. In 1994, they recorded their debut album "Orchid," which was released the following year in Europe. What set the album apart from the conventional death metal formula was the inclusion of non-typical death metal instruments like piano, acoustic guitars, and clean singing. The album was met with positive acclaim from both fans and critics, of which its success has opened doors to more opportunities for the band. Opeth has kept their tradition of pushing the boundaries of death metal with unconventional songwriting and infusion of other musical elements, which are very apparent in their succeeding albums.
Forefront in the metal scene
Opeth went on their first world tour in 2001 with the release of their fifth album, "Blackwater Park." The album was highly successful and received several awards, placing 18th in IGN’s "Top Metal Albums" in 2007, and 28th in Rolling Stone’s Greatest Prog-Rock Albums of All Time in 2015. With Opeth at the forefront in the modern death metal scene, the genre takes a strong position in music consumption not only in Sweden, but in other parts of the world as well.
