The men in black and gold
Formed by businessmen David Dixon and John W. Mecom Jr. in 1966, the New Orleans Saints joined the National Football League a year later. In 1970 they became a founding member of the NFC West alongside the Atlanta Falcons, the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers, and in 1991 they got their hands on the division title for the first time. The men in black and gold then moved to the NFC South in 2002 with the Falcons, the Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where they entered their most successful phase. The Saints picked up no fewer than seven division titles over the next 17 years and in 2009 beat the champions of the AFC, the Indianapolis Colts, to lift the Super Bowl XLIV in their first ever appearance. From Sir Saint to the Saintsations
After calling the Tulane Stadium their home for their first seven years in existence, the New Orleans Saints moved to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in 1974. Apart from a brief relocation due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in the mid-‘00s, it is where they have remained ever since. Hall of Famers, such as offensive tackle Willie Roaf, quarterback Ken Stabler, linebacker Rickey Jackson and kicker Morten Andersen, are just a few of the key players who have walked out onto its field over the years, while notable coaches have included Jim E. Mora, Jim Haslett and Sean Payton. Fans heading to the 73,000-capacity venue on matchdays should look forward to a rousing atmosphere, with the two much-loved Saint Bernard mascots, known as Gumbo and Sir Saint, and the official cheerleading squad, dubbed the Saintsations, all adding to the sense of occasion. Don’t miss out on the chance to see the historic NFL team play at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. You can both buy and sell New Orleans Saints tickets on StubHub.
