From the Grammy Awards to Gil Scott-Heron
Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1989, Leon Bridges largely grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, where he taught himself how to play the guitar and began writing his own songs. Inspired by soul legends Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, his vintage soul-blues sound quickly attracted the attention of White Denim’s Joshua Block and Austin Jenkins, who offered to co-produce his first album. After signing with Columbia Records, Bridges released his debut, "Coming Home", in 2015, scoring a viral hit with its title track and picking up a "Best R&B Album" nomination at the following year’s Grammy Awards. Bridges also impressed with performances at Sundance and SXSW, an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" and his collaboration with hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. In 2018 he supported former One Direction member Harry Styles on various South American dates, achieved further critical acclaim with his sophomore, "Good Thing", and portrayed Gil Scott-Heron in space drama "First Man". Sharp-dressed man, soulful vintage sound
Whether you’re a long-time fan or only know of his music through its use in the likes of "Big Little Lies", "Pacific Rim: Uprising" and the Apple iPhone 6 commercial, you will undoubtedly be awe-inspired by Leon Bridges’ talents as a live performer. The Grammy nominee can often have the audience in the palm of his hand, armed with just a microphone and a guitar as he performs his timeless and heartfelt numbers in his familiar, honey-soaked tones. But Bridges is just as compelling when he ups the tempo and expands on his classic sound with the help of a sharply-dressed backing band, as on the likes of "Bad News" and "If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)". And although his shows definitely have one foot steeped in the 1960s, his covers of contemporary R&B songs such as Ginuwine’s "Pony" and the rendition of his collab with electronic duo Odesza prove that Bridges can move beyond his comfort zone too.
