An accomplished singer, a prolific actress
China is home to great singers who are applauded not only domestically, but internationally. Among these iconic songstresses that have gained such a wide recognition in the industry is Karen Mok. The singer, whose real name is Karen Joy Morris, was born in British Hong Kong in 1970. She officially debuted her singing career at the age of 23 with the release of her self-titled album. The same year was also her debut in film, as she played the star role in the movie "The Tigers: The Legend of Canton." From then on, her career has been on a steady climb, following consecutive releases of chart-topping songs and blockbuster movies. Within a span of 20 years, she has released 10 albums, four EPs, and has starred in 35 films. Karen Mok received her first awards in 1996 when she won Best Supporting Actress for the movie "Fallen Angels." The awards were given by the Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Bauhinia Awards. She received her first award as a singer in 2003 when she won Best Female Mandarin Artist at the Golden Melody Awards. Among her most iconic hits include "Half in Heaven, Half on Earth," "Growing Fond of You," "Not Enough Love," and "Dancing in the Rain."
Karen Mok’s singing is easily recognizable for her distinct voice. Her vocal flexibility gives her a wide array of singing styles that she can cover. Her pitch hits a central range, neither low nor high, which makes her songs well within reach of most people, and thus ideal for karaokes or covers. Couple that with catchy melodies, and listeners can easily pick up her songs and sing along. Just like her recordings, Karen Mok’s live performances are also highly commendable. She is known for being able to connect with the audience through her commanding stage presence and emotional expressions. Already having a long tenured career, Karen Mok still continues to make movies and perform in concerts to this day.
