John Bishop returns!
Compared to other comics, John Bishop has enjoyed more of a slow burn on his rise to the top of the pile. In fact, this Liverpool native didn't venture into the world of stand-up comedy until his late thirties. However, in Bishop's case, patience has truly paid off. Since launching his comedy career in 2000, he has become one of the most beloved acts in the UK and has enjoyed a career that's branched out into television presenting and acting. Breakthrough into comedy
Bishop was a relatively late bloomer in the world of stand-up comedy. He originally enjoyed a career as a pharmaceutical rep, as well as a short-lived stint in non-league football teams, before changing direction and pursuing his dreams of becoming a stand-up. His first experience as a stand-up comic came in late 2000 when he performed live in Manchester. In 2001, he pursued a career in comedy more aggressively, making it to the final of So You Think You're Funny, an open mic competition run by the Daily Telegraph. In the same year, he also succeeded in becoming a finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards and the City Life North West Comedian of The Year, winning the latter.
It wasn't until 2002 that true success would come, with Bishop being named the best newcomer by BBC Radio Merseyside. Two years later, he would walk away with the first-place prize at the North West Comedy Awards for his solo stand-up show. He became known to UK audiences in a big way when he appeared on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, cropping up during the Manchester leg of the series. Capitalising on this success, he took his touring show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it was nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award.
John Bishop's live shows and touring
Since 2010, John Bishop has balanced a successful television career with an active presence on the stand-up touring circuit. His Eddie-nominated tour, The Elvis Has Left the Building Tour was a firm favourite in 2010, followed by The Sunshine Tour in 2011. As nationwide recognition beckoned, Bishop continued to take his unique style of comedy across the country, with The Rollercoaster Tour in 2012 and the Supersonic Tour in 2014.
In the following few years, Bishop would focus on other ventures, including charity work and his own chat show, John Bishop: In Conversation With.... He returned to touring in 2017 with a brand new set, Winging It, selling to packed-out audiences. Looking to experience the Mersey comic in all his glory?
