Tribes, Vibes and Scribes
Formed by Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick and Paul ‘Tubbs’ Williams in 1979, Incognito were spawned from the funk collective known as Light of the World. The group released their debut album, Jazz Funk, two years later, but only broke through to the mainstream in 1991 with the long-awaited sophomore album Inside Life. Featuring guest vocals of powerhouse diva Jocelyn Brown, their rendition of Ronnie Laws’s "Always There" cracked the UK Top 10 that same year, while in 1992 they enjoyed similar success with an uplifting cover of Stevie Wonder’s "Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing." Incognito were subsequently hailed as one of the burgeoning acid jazz scene’s biggest outfits and continued their success with albums such as Tribes, Vibes and Scribes; Positivity; and 100° and Rising. The band have released no fewer than 10 new LPs since the turn of the century, including "Life, Stranger Than Fiction," "Adventures in Black Sunshine," "Tales from the Beach," and "In Search of Better Days," and they continue to take their uplifting brand of jazz, soul, and funk on the road. An ever-changing but always musically gifted line-up
With such a wealth of material to choose from, it’s impossible to predict the setlist for an Incognito show, although, of course, their two signature hits are bound to make an appearance. It’s just as difficult to guess which musicians will make an appearance too. More than 60 different singers and instrumentalists have joined the British collective over the years, with particularly famous names like Mod legend Paul Weller, actor Max Beesley, singer-songwriter Carleen Anderson, soul veteran Jocelyn Brown, American jazz vocalist Maysa, Eurovision entrant Imaani, and acclaimed trumpeter Chris Botti. One man has remained an ever-present contributor, however, throughout the collective’s five decades: co-founder Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick. It’s his strong musicianship and uncanny ability to select the best emerging and established musicians on the British jazz-funk scene that has made Incognito a must-see live act. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see the long-running collective up close and personal, and peruse the Incognito tickets available now at StubHub.
