The team in deep steel blue
Founded by local businessman Bob McNair in 1999, the Houston Texans first took to the NFL field three years later. As a result, they overtook the Houston Oilers, who later relocated to Nashville under the guise of the Tennessee Titans and as the youngest franchise in the league. The team won their first ever AFC South division championship in 2011 and went on to pick up a further four titles over the decade. Dom Capers, Gary Kubiak, Wade Phillips and Bill O’Brien have all taken charge of the Houston Texans since their formation, while notable players include Hall of Famer Ed Reed, Ring of Honor inductee Andre Johnson and Pro Bowl selections DeMeco Ryans, Arian Foster, Jonathan Joseph, J.J. Watt and Duane Brown. The franchise plays its home games at the NRG Stadium, a 72,000-capacity venue that also hosts the Texas Bowl and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The high energy of the NRG stadium
Despite their relatively recent formation, the Houston Texans have still developed several rivalries, including with fellow AFC South teams the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts and their Governor’s Cup competitors the Dallas Cowboys. But the NRG Stadium always boasts an electric atmosphere whichever team it’s welcoming through its gates thanks to the 45-strong Bull Pen Pep Band, the Houston Texas Cheerleaders and official mascot Toro whipping the crowd up into a frenzy. Other traditions include Battle Red Day where fans sport the franchise’s alternate red colours, the rousing player introductions and the Bull Pen where the stadium’s north end perform various chants and songs. The Houston Texans also blast out various musical themes each matchday, including Clay Walker’s "It’s Football Time in Houston", Rage Against the Machine’s "Bulls on Parade" and Chevelle’s "Hats off to the Bull".
