As Welch confessed that the name calls back to a time when Welch spent her youth collaborating with teenage friend Isabella “Machine” Summers (now on keyboards/backing vocals). Performing together under the name Florence Robot/Isa Machine, the name changed from Isa Machine tuned to The Machine, and they’ve been together ever since!
