Danish Football's Proud History
Denmark have established themselves among the European footballing elite since the 1980s. Their greatest achievement came in the 1992 European Championships when they incredibly defeated reigning European Champions, The Netherlands, in the semi-final; as well as reigning World Champions, Germany, in the final to lift the trophy. The country also tasted success in the 1995 Confederations Cup, defeating Argentina in the final. While Denmark is yet to taste Football World Cup success, they have qualified on five occasions, reaching the quarter-finals in France 1998 before being eliminated by Brazil in a classic match that ended 3-2 to the South Americans. The Danes swept the Republic of Ireland aside to qualify for the tournament in Russia and will be hoping to go even further in 2018.
On top of their incredible on-field success, the Danish national team has produced some of football's greatest individual talents. Goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, known as "The Great Dane" won multiple titles with Manchester United and was an integral part of the 1992 Denmark side who won the European Championships. He also holds the record for the most caps, playing for his country on 129 occasions! Other notable names who have graced the pitch in Danish colours include Michael Laudrup, Brian Laudrup, and Christian Erikson.
Danish Football's Records and Greatest Achievements
The interest in the national team is phenomenal throughout Denmark and football matches are regularly sold out. A record attendance of 51,600 witnessed a narrow 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Sweden in June 1957. The modern stadium attendance record occurred in October 2005, when 42,099 spectators poured through the turnstiles to see the Danes defeat reigning European Champions, Greece, 1-0 in an important World Cup qualifier.
The Danish football team provides shock results on a regular basis, with one of their most prolific victories occurring in the Football World Cup back in 1986 when they defeated a fancied Uruguay 6-1. However, even that huge scoreline pales in comparison to their biggest ever win, a 17-1 rout of the France A side in 1908. Large score lines aside, the Danish national football team's most significant victory of all time was without a doubt the 2-0 victory against Germany in the 1992 European Championships final which cemented Denmark among European football's elite.
