Cats- a short feline history
Based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" this larger than life production has been thrilling audiences of all ages since it opened in the West End's New London Theatre in 1981. With music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, original direction by Trevor Nunn and choreography by Gillian Lynne this Cameron Mackintosh production was an instant hit. Cats has been performed around the world and translated into nearly 20 languages.
T.S. Eliot's "Book of Practical Cats" was a childhood favourite of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Eliot's words and Webber's music bring fantastical felines such as Rum Tug Tugger, Mr Mistoffelees, Grizabella and, of course, Macavity, to life on the stage. These are just some of the special Jellicle Cats that come out for one night of the year to perform for Old Deuteronomy at the Jellicle Ball. Only one can be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
Cats - a record-breaking show
Whether you've seen Cats yet or not, you're sure to be familiar with the poignant strains of Grizabella's "Memory". Sung in the original production by Elaine Paige this record-breaking song from a record-breaking show has been recorded by over 150 artists from Liberace to Barbara Streisand. The original West End production of Cats ran for a staggering 21 years and 9,000 performances. In London, it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical while on Broadway it ran for 18 years and received 7 Tony Awards also including one for Best Musical. A host of famous names has worn the amazing feline costumes and makeup to take to the Cats stage since Elaine Paige wowed the original audience.
