Burnley Football Club return to the top
Burnley F.C. are also affectionately known as The Clarets, due to their signature claret and blue kit! Based in Lancashire's Burnley, the team actually began life as a rugby club before switching codes in 1882, then, in 1988, they became one of the founding members of the Football League.
The club has a proud history. To begin with, they are one of five teams to have one all of the top four professional divisions of English football. The other teams to have accomplished this are Portsmouth, Preston North End, Sheffield United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Burnley have won the Football League title twice, once in 1921 and once again in 1960. They've also won one FA Cup in 1914, and have two Community Shields, won in 1960 and 1973. Since the advent of the Premier League, Burnley haven't had the same level of success however, though not from lack of trying. As many teams in the Premier League are quick to point out, the lucrative television deal will see Burnley and other clubs earn an amount so high that, with the right signings, could easily see them finish strongly.
Turf Moor's homegrown values
Playing at Burnley's Turf Moor stadium, (a venue incidentally shared with Burnley cricket club), it may surprise you to find that Burnley was instrumental in the conception of youth academies, with the club becoming one of the first to build an academy next to their stadium. As you can imagine, their commitment to youth paid off, and in 1960 Burnley won the league with a team composed almost exclusively of homegrown players! Burnley were also revolutionary in the art of deadball tactics. Famed manager Alan Brown introduced the concept of the "short corner" to English football, laying a corner off to a creative player rather than trying to pump the ball in to the box.
