The Man Behind the Music
Born in Beirut in 1968, Ara Mailikian is a violinist of Lebanese, American and Spanish descent. He’s studied and played violin since an early age and spends most of his time in Madrid where he often plays in a duo with pianist Serouj Kradjian. The 2 are best known for their original album Miniatures and their recordings of Robert Schumann’s complete cycle of Sonatas. Mailikian also serves as the concertmaster for the Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid, (The Resident Orchestra of the Madrid Royal Opera). Mailikian also enjoys bringing musical elements from other cultures into his performances whenever appropriate. Audiences often get to enjoy a blend of Jewish, Arab, Middle Eastern, Argentinian Tango, Spanish Flamenco, and Central European Gipsy and Klezmer music at some of his shows as well. Mailikian receives ongoing invitations to perform with the world’s top orchestras including the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the London Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonica de Portugal, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra Armenia Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Tubingen, the Belgrade Philharmonic, and the Moscu Virtuosi. Mailikian has studied at Berlin’s Hochschule fur Musik und Theater Hannover and at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In addition, he received private lessons from renowned professors like Herman Krebbers, Ruggiero Ricci, Ivry Gitlis, Members of the Alban Berg Quartet and Franco Gulli. Mailikian has also won numerous awards in dozens of international competitions including first place in Spain’s Pablo Sarasate Competition in 1995 and in Germany’s Felix Mendelssohn Competition in 1987. He’s also received other prizes like the Niccolo Paganini Award in Italy, the Rodolfo Lipizer Award in Italy, the Jeunesses Musicales Award in Yugoslavia, the International Artists Guild Award in the USA, the Zino Francescatti Award in France, an award from the International Music Competition in Japan and a Prize for Artistic Devotion and Achievement from the German Ministry of Culture. Mailikian is known throughout the world for his talent and for dedication to his craft. He’s played concerts in over 40 countries in such well-known venues as Carnegie Hall, Salle Pleyel, The Ford Centre in Toronto and the Auditorio Nacional and Teatro Real.
