Short history of J-rock and AliA
For some people, the mention of Japan is always associated with monster attacks, giant robots, and disproportionately out-of-this-world game shows. While those are all true, there’s one more thing to add about Japan that just can’t be missed—J-rock. J-rock, or Japanese rock, has been shaking up Japan’s music scene since the 70s. The genre that was influenced by American and British music back in the 60s has now become a staple amongst Japanese listeners. J-rock’s popularity eventually transcended beyond the borders of Japan, thanks to the worldwide mass consumption of Japanese animation. Japanese animation, colloquially referred to as anime, has carried J-rock across the world as their iconic opening and ending theme songs. The opening of a global audience to Japanese music gave rise to the international stardom of many artists from Japan. Among the artists that are making waves with their own brand of J-rock is AliA. The six-piece band was formed by singer Ayame, drummer Bob, violinist Rina, bassist Seiya, keyboardist KTK, and guitarist Okamura Keren. They debuted in 2018 with the release of their EP, ‘Alive’.
Their own J-pop formula
AliA’s music has everything lovable about J-rock—upbeat tempos, happy grooves, and an overall energetic vibe. Their carrier single, "Impulse", is laden with fast drum beats and chugging guitars while being supported by catchy bass hooks. Overlying the harmonic barrage of the rhythm section is the thick layer of keyboards and violin. The singing is highly dynamic which goes from fast to very fast and is then held together by its slower gliding parts. Many of AliA’s songs follow the same formula and is typical of most J-rock bands, but with their own artistic twists and signature executions. AliA has been a much talked about band since their debut. With a steadily growing fanbase in and outside of Japan, the band continues to tour in different countries in Asia, Europe, and North America as the new propagators of J-rock.
